Species Lore

Welcome to the lore page! Here is where you will find all the information about how Vatland Slime Monsters came to be, how they lived, how they continue to live and how they interact with the world around them, that as far as they're concerned, they own the entire planet. To the left are buttons labelled with each section of the lore that you can read, some parts more developed than others! If you have any questions, concerns or have headcanons or ideas you want to share on the lore, feel free to head on over to the discord server. We have a group of really nice folks who are tagged as Loremasters.Loremasters are the folks who are trusted with giving official answers to any questions on the lore of PROJECT:Vatland, and they also help build it up as it grows and expands with more to learn about.

Creation

The original Vatland Slime Monsters were created through a process called somatic embryogenesis, which happened inside of a large vat that is lit from below and above the embryo and simulated similar conditions to growing inside of the womb. The DNA used for each embryo was originally derived from staff in the facility, usually the highest ranked soldiers guarding the facility, and modified to a point of extreme mutation, but was also altered to make VSMs appear in a uniform shape that would allow them to be separated from a civilian setting if necessary.Through the first stages of growth, a VSM would photosynthesize. To aid in development, personnel would pump nutrients, minerals and chemicals into vats during the embryotic and whelp stages to encourage the growth, positive mutation and strengthening of the VSM inside. They also did this to also prevent diseases and negatively affecting mutations, which are usually reasons for the euthanization of many newly pulled VSMs, even if they could be nursed back to health. The embryotic stage of a VSM's growth within the vat usually lasts 2 years, which then it will be considered a whelp. At this stage, whelps can survive being outside of the vats, but will need guidance as any regular child would, though they are more rowdy and much more developed at this point. This is a rare occurence and only happens if the whelp is in life-threatening condition.A VSM will be considered a whelp until it is at least 13 years old, in which it can be pulled from the vat and thrown into immediate testing and then training for whatever job it may do, unless it is labelled as a permanent subject of study.Outside of the facility, all VSMs are birthed through a more natural method, growing naturally as would most mammalian species would, despite historically growing through photosynthesis. You will now rarely ever meet a VSM that was vat-pulled, as they are usually advancing in age and a life of violence and abuse is finally catching up to them.

Facility Life

In the facility, VSMs were never referred to as a species or even as people. They were called "units" and were treated as tools, weapons against whatever enemy the military would have unleashed these violent beings on.Very few members of the military were aware of VSMs existences, even those who's DNA were taken and mutated most likely didn't know. And most VSMs weren't aware there was an outside world, until they started getting more intelligent.Against popular belief within the PROJECT: Vatland facility, VSMs were actually very sentient, and quite a few were unnaturally intelligent. The staff of the facility likely thought against this because of the immense amount of aggression that VSMs displayed, even attempting to hunt and attack staff members from behind sealed glass windows. Some were even successful in their attempts on the lives of those who took part in their creation. After being pulled from their vats at age 13, most VSMs were immediately thrown into testing then training, usually designated by the color of slime they displayed. Each slime color dictated a better use for the VSMs, as they indicated a different skillset each VSM was better suited for.Red slime was better for for combat training. Yellow slime, for medical training. Blue slime, for education in tactical planning. Some VSMs, regardless of their health or slime color, never made it to training even after being pulled from vats due to their severe aggression, usually being euthanized, nearly immediately. The facility found that severely aggressive VSMs were not easy to train, this not worth the effort, despite how much funding was put into them as biological weapons of war. After they had been pulled from their vats, VSMs in the facilities would receive a serial number. A lot of VSMs would die, even after this point, usually fading to their death, even during their training sessions due to underlying issues that were not caught or not easily screened for. Their remains still keep their numbers, and are studied as well. Most VSMs at the time had a serial number between #0000010 and #0020000, the number of VSMs that were made before the project had crashed, whether they were alive, had already passed, or had been euthanized. The abuse the VSMs faced in the facilities were unimaginable, especially for those who were designated permanent subjects of study, experimented and tested on until they could no longer keep themselves alive, then given a death the only way the facility knew how dole out to a near unkillable beast like the Vatland Slime Monsters were. This abuse was noted by more intelligent members of the species, and they soon began to learn how to communicate among each other without being interrupted or punished by facility staff. This led to an important event that the VSMs have titled "The Culling" and they tell stories of it, even after escaping years ago.

Artwork by Purrbone

The Culling

Not much is remembered of the culling, even to those who did their best to document the event. One minute, it was all just the drone of electrical machinery and the regular noises present in the VATCORP lab, experiments being conducted, procedures being completed and documentation being filed. The next minute? Utter chaos, VATCORP's staff were being torn to shreds and consumed without a second thought, VSMs were streaming through the hallways with triumphant screeches, the guards posted around the facility were outnumbered, most lost to cannibal wave. With every passing pure that has aged this far, more of the facts of The Culling are lost to memory, younger VSMs never taking the time or effort to learn of the significant event. Some branches don't even acknowledge it, for the entirety of their populations have no recollection of it.Those who do know of The Culling will never be able to recall the details correctly, only what older VSMs have told them, and time has done their elderly, feeble minds in as the doors are shutting these individuals quickly.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven, previously an abandoned mine for various precious metals and gems, is now the home to a majority of the VSM population. Safe Haven, despite it's name, is very much a cesspool of abuse and torture, with a brutal hierarchy to top it all off.Of course, VSMs have had to change and evolve themselves to adapt to dig in these caves. Their large arms are able to pick up, dig and move larger rocks, mounds of dirt, and help them in the long run by acting as a sort of storage for excess slime they may produce, making their arms very heavy weapons. In Safe Haven, their society is much different than in the PROJECT: Vatland facilities, where they were originally from. Here, they have hierarchies, jobs, and even began to form their own system of trade and are creating a type of sick economy, using the bones and remains of their fellow VSMs as well as those of other, more natural organisms.Within the tunnels of Safe Haven, there are shorter tunnels are are typically dedicated to specific, smaller groups of slimes, more comparable to small villages or towns, and within those tunnels, even smaller tunnels dedicated to family groups. These small town-like tunnels are referred to as branches.Branches typically do have names, sometimes they are made up words, sometimes they are derived from common language, sometimes their names literally are just a symbol. VSMs do not have a strict naming system, and will do as they wish when naming themselves and others of their species, be it their offspring or their mutant "pets".All branches are led by a VSM that is deemed worthy of the position, referred to as a Branchleader, though some prefer branchowner. Branchleaders are often pures, though a sudden burst of the mixed-colored purple slimes have led to a boom in mixed slime branchleaders.

Hierarchy

Vatland Slime Monsters have a color-based hierarchy, though it is often broken due to the mixed-colored VSMs natural abilities being derived from the two colors that make them up. When referring to colors, VSMs aren't talking about fur, skin or scales, but by the internal slime color, which stays permanent to them forever and can affect their performance as an individual throughout their lives. The caste hierarchy system only came into play after VSMs began forming a society within Safe Haven. In the facilities of Project: Vatland, they had no power over anyone,
not even themselves, and those who know of this history, resent it.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Pure Class.
Pure Vatland Slime Monsters have one of three colors: Red, Yellow or Blue,
and are considered to be the VSM equivalent to royalty.
Next in the hierarchy is the Mixed Class.
Mixed VSMs make up a majority of the population, and while they derive from the pure class, they are not truly considered to be pures, as their slime has been mixed to be different from the original, three pure colors of slime.
At the very bottom of the hierarchy is the Mutant Class.
Mutant VSMs are not really considered their own people, and are treated more as property or as status symbols for classes higher than they are. And some mutants, or "mutes" are more desirable than others. It's a highly unfair system, and quite a few mutants try to run and leave Safe Haven for this reason, hoping to escape and find themselves a life worth having.

Pure Vatland Slime MonsterS

Pure Vatland Slime Monsters are considered royalty, due to their slime colors being traceable back to the days of when VSMs were once held captive as lab experiments by VATCORP.There are 3 colors to be considered "pure" in the VSM world:
Red, Yellow, and Blue.
Red VSMs are known for the following traits:
> Their extreme aggression.
> Their Violent natures.
> And their abundance of raw strength and energy.
While red VSMs may not be the smartest slimes around, they are extremely violent and never willingly back off of from a fight. Their anger and violent natures make them very valuable for fighting and hunting, and are often seen taking over an individual branch of Safe Haven's many tunnels. They make great warriors and hunters, and any slime mixed with them is usually going to display behaviors closer to their red half more than their other parts.Yellow VSMs are known for the following traits:
> Their nurturing nature.
> Their need and desire to protect.
> And their devotion and loyalty to their loved ones.
Yellow VSMs are some of the best hands you could trust with the sick, the elderly and the young. They naturally want nothing more than to keep their loved ones safe and are some of the sweetest slime monsters and most honest slime monsters you could meet. They make amazing caregivers, medics and teachers, and while these are great traits to have, they are not the most prominent in slime monsters that are mixed with yellow.Blue VSMs are known for the following traits:
> Their extremely high intellect.
> Their perceived "sophistication".
> And their extremely intricate plans, ideas and their thinking.
Blue VSMs are some of the smartest in the species, boasting extreme intelligence and the ability to manipulate as if they've hypnotized other slimes. They often can be seen organizing for their ruling tanks and making plans and organizing parties heading out of their thirds. They make great advisers, organizers, inventors and leaders. These traits mixed with a red slime's traits would make an already deadly slime monster so much more dangerous, but the chances of these two mixing are pretty slime due to their differences in behaviors.

Mixed Vatland Slime MonsterS

Mixed VSMs are exactly as described. They are the VSMs that resulted from the original made VSMs getting together and reproducing with VSMs not of their own slime color. These VSMs can often be more powerful than their rarer, pure counterparts, as the mixed colors can often result in a deadly combination of traits associated with each color, especially combined with something like being a tank VSM or just being born with the natural abilities to outsmart or beat out any other competition with them.Any color not included in the pure category and is not considered a mutant color would be put into this category, pretty much a free for all!

Mutant Vatland Slime Monsters

Despite already being mutants themselves, VSMs actually do have mutations of their normal genes, often presented through slime color. This also means that mutants are affected by the VSM hierarchy, which is based off of their slime color and strength, and unfortunately, it is usually always negatively. Safe Haven is more of a hell for slime monsters with mutated slime colors. The two most common mutations are Melanistic (pure black slime) and Albino (pure white slime), and both are treated as less than, as pets and/or property to be kept.Melanistic VSMs are considered the "poor man's mute", as they are the most common of mutation, hence being very obtainable. You often see pures and sometimes mixed slimes with several melanistic VSMs under their control, usually treated as "guard dogs" or "work horses". While most melanistic VSMs stay small if they become melanistic at a young age, sometimes they can still reach the sizes of "tanks", usually due to fighting with other tanks at an adult size.Melanism can sometimes occur in VSMs when they experience a near-death experience, usually dying and being resuscitated. Not all the time, but there's a chance that it could happen. Once a VSM's slime has fully darkened, it is usually described as extra thick and pitch black. The VSM's fur will dull out until all color has left it, leaving a black, white and gray shell of what was possibly a vibrantly colored being. Melanistic VSMs also display zombie-like behaviors, an unnatural display of aggression, a insatiable hunger for the flesh - or slime - of their next kill.Albino VSMs are usually born from illness, a weak birth, or too much light exposure resulting in weakness and illness as a young whelp. It is very unusual for an albino to survive after birth, so they are considered a higher status symbol "pet", much like how designer dog breeds are for the insanely rich.Albino VSMs display a complete lack of color like melanistics, but are always a very light gray to pure white in coloration with a very small amount of darker grays, and of course, the pure white slime. They typically display very little to no aggression, most seeming timid and shy. Very rarely will you get an albino vsm that has an attitude, but they have happened! These are very pampered VSMs compared to melanistic and leucistic VSMs, and you will only ever see pure VSMs have one or rarely two or more in their entourages.A third type of VSM mutation is the leucistic VSM. These are considerably the most rare as they are also controversial, but they are not treated as high-value pets in Safe Haven as their albino parents are. There are 2 subcategories of leucistic VSMs, with some key differences.A leucistic VSM is often created when an albino VSM mixes with any other color of VSM, so there is always a dulling or lightening of colors, but never a complete lack. This will often create a variation of pastel colored slime monsters, with light, pastel-like colorations. They are often a mix between the parent VSMs in abilities and colors, but they are often stronger than an albino. The second category of leucistic is a Gray Leucistic. These are specifcally a mix between melanistic and albino VSMs. Like other leuicistics, they are a mix of their parents in colors and abilities, and display traits mixed between the two, however, their colors are usually not as contrasting. They will never have pure white or pure black colorations, and usually their color palettes will be pretty close in contrast, though they can be lighter or darker, depending on the brightness or darkness of the gray slime, which can vary between gray leucistics.

Slymbrids

Slymbrids are what you get when a VSM crosses with another, less genetically diverse species. These are probably the rarest occurrence within the species as they require a VSM to actually be mildly interested in another, non-vsm organism as someone other than just their next snack. Most Slymbrids take after their non-VSM parents, though their blood color will be some variation of a mix between both the slime color of their VSM parent and the blood color of their non-VSM parent. Very rarely will a slymbrid actually be able to be born with the same abilities as a regular VSM, such as being able to change their own shape.

Death

For a VSM, death is usually not considered a big deal. I mean, why would it? Most things that die become the food of a VSM, though sometimes a VSM will mourn the death of other things, VSMs or not. Mourning is much more rare in Safe Haven, and often times even ridiculed. Most times, inside of Safe Haven of course, death is often seen as an opportunity to gain currency, to raise your social status, or to get your hands on an easy snack. It's not treated very delicately, and often times, it's those who already have power are the ones to benefit from it.Death for a VSM can happen in a number of ways. Old age is obviously one, and it's mostly due to an already present genetic defect in all VSMs. Once a VSM starts reaching an older age, their outer layer of slime ends up starting to become more porous, causing more air to get in. As they are older, they don't have the strength to regenerate their slime as quickly as they've done in their older age, so the slime internally begins to harden, causing them to stiffen more and more until they completely dry out. It's often a painful way of going, and most VSMs never go out this way.Similar to old age, VSMs can also die from being forcibly dried out, usually from using a desiccant or through extreme heat. There usually is no way to recover from drying out, as once they're dried out, they are harder than natural stone. This was often used in VATCORP's methods of euthanization, and is still being used by the military for caught VSMs.Another notable and very common form of death for VSMs is cannibalism. VSMs are not like the rest of society. Cannibalizing others and their own species is just the norm, and it's just part of day-to-day life when the pickings are slim outside of Safe Haven.

Artwork by CryptidNeons

Tanks

Tank VSMs are a usually a result of an already pre-existing gene in VSMs that would allow them to grow to massive heights of 10 feet, even larger! It is rare to get a VSM that can grow into a tank, however not impossible. In Safe Haven, they do usually stay on the smaller side of the limits, between 10 to 20 feet, due to the fact that the largest tanks (Chexx, who ranks in at 25 feet and Loki, who ranks in at 23 feet) to ever exist in Safe Haven would cull them easily at any larger sizes. Most tank VSMs have a hard time getting past the 15 foot mark, and rarely anywhere near 20 feet, but those who have usually do find themselves to become that night's dinner to one of the entourages of either Chexx or Loki.Tanks are also very commonly super muscular, and often very intimidating, so they are very commonly seen as Branchleaders, commanding the smaller, weaker VSMs beneath them to do whatever bidding they desire, while also serving as a form of protection to themIt is not uncommon for tank whelps to be kicked out of their home branches by the Branchleader, and often take up dispersal roles. This often leads to then trying to take over other branches or even attempting to take their homebranch.

DISEASE

Like many other organic beings, VSMs have their fair share of illnesses, and a lot of times they are culled off unless it can benefit the other VSMs around them.ROCKPOKE
> VSMs inflicted often have rough, rock-like spurs of hardened slime protruding from their bodies.
> Acts a lot like arthritis, but can result in a slow, painful death due to internal slime constantly leaking and drying up.
> VSMs inflicted sometimes are used to harvest Squaw and Vash from.
> No Known Treatment.
GEMPOKE
> VSMs inflicted often have shiny, crystalized spurs and clumps of hardened slime protruding from their bodies.
> Much like Rockpoke, but instead of a rough rock, it is very clean slime hardening into what could be mistaken for precious crystals.
> VSMs inflicted are often used to harvest "crystals" from, as it is considered precious.
> A rare disease, so when a VSM is found with it, they are heavily guarded and kept alive for as long as possible, though excrutiating for them.
> No Known Treatment.
VLUDMELT
> Where a VSM uncontrollably will start leaking slime without apparent causation, slowly and painfully turning into a material called Vlud.
> Extremely deadly, usually killing within weeks. The vlud left over is sometimes harvested and used as a torture method.
> No known treatment.

Slime Color

All Artwork in this section by CryptidNeons

Slime color is one of the most crucial elements of a VSM. There is lots of explanation on the importance of Slime Color in the Lore Pages!

> VSM "blood" is actually slime! A VSM has a slime color palette instead of a blood or flesh color palette.>Slime color usually shows in the nose, pawpads, and flesh of the VSM. See "The Basic VSM" below for a visual reference of this.>Use this image with the Colorpick tool to find what color your Slime has.> Be aware melanistic, albino, and leucistic slimes have special design rules should you wish to make one. These rules are below in the section titled "MUTANT SLIMES."
